PAPA JOHN’S FRANCHISE

Join us!

The international pizza chain Papa John’s is expanding into the Netherlands.

What is the franchising model and how does it work?

Franchising is an agreement between a brand owner (local or international) and an individual or business, allowing the latter to use the brand’s name, operating methods, and trademarks to sell products or services. The individual or business is called the franchisee, and the brand owner is the franchisor. The franchise agreement specifies the terms under which the franchisee may use the brand, including the fees to be paid to the franchisor. Franchising is a great way for companies to grow their business and increase revenue. At the same time, it offers entrepreneurs, freelancers, and small businesses the opportunity to gain independence and leverage the success of an established brand. Franchising is a common and widely accepted model in various industries worldwide, including hospitality, fashion, toys, home goods, and of course, food.

Different types of franchising

Franchising serves as a safety net and springboard for small businesses aiming to expand. It succeeds because it allows operating under an existing, established brand with a strong reputation and a loyal customer base. There are four main types of franchising: full franchising, operational franchising, master franchising for a local area, and master franchising for an international area. At Papa John’s, the world’s fastest-growing chain, we implement two of these four models: operational franchising and full franchising.

A closer look at full franchising

With full franchising, the franchisee purchases the full license from the franchisor, who grants them the right to use its trademarks, products, and intellectual property and market them to the public. Unlike operational franchising—where the franchisee independently establishes and finances the store—the franchisor provides comprehensive training before opening and ongoing support afterward. Each calendar month, the franchisee pays royalties to the franchisor. Full franchising is the most common franchising model in the food sector in the Netherlands.

Why the food sector?

The food sector has huge business potential: it’s popular, profitable, and indispensable. People may go without buying clothes or other products, but they never skip their favorite meals. The sector continues to grow with many niches: fast food, gourmet, molecular cuisine—each with its own clientele and opportunities. Despite fierce competition, the demand never ends, so entrepreneurs can find the niche that suits them and develop in exciting directions.

Fast food – enormous potential

Fast food is by far the most in-demand niche. With modern busy lives, cooking at home isn’t always feasible, making fast food an economical and convenient alternative. Popular fast food options include burgers, Mexican cuisine, sushi, and above all, pizza. Pizza is simple, satisfying, and endlessly versatile with various toppings, sauces, and side dishes.

Successful pizza franchises

Franchisees in pizza chains (local or global) always have customers, in every season and at all hours. Pizza fits every occasion: sports events, birthdays, evenings with friends, late-night binges—and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Pizza has become a cornerstone product with constant demand. That’s why entrepreneurs choose pizza franchising and back a guaranteed winner.

Franchising success with Papa John’s

Papa John’s is the world’s fastest-growing chain, aiming to double its number of stores in the Netherlands within two years. With a 40-year reputation and a loyal customer base, the chain regularly refreshes and reinvents its menu to meet modern demands.

The franchise fee is relatively low, making it accessible to launch an independent business under a successful international pizza brand. Franchisees actively participate in opening new locations and receive about six months of professional training at an existing outlet. Papa John’s also assists in finding the prime location, designing and building the store, providing financial guidance, and training staff.

The chain supplies a marketing framework that generates sales from day one, and franchisees receive a store that meets international operational and visual standards—often with exclusive rights for an entire city or region.
